Mineral Sunscreen, The Healthy Way to Sunbathe

There are many ways to express your outer beauty…..your smile, your clothes, your style, your swagger, and radiant healthy skin.

The summer brings so many fun activities to enjoy…. reading a book on the beach, playing in the park, biking riding, swimming, surfing, acroyoging, picnics….and so much more!

So don't let the intensity of the sun ruin your fete! Take a mindful moment to prepare your skin for the sun’s strong UVA/UVB rays.

Make sure your skin is prepared for all the long hours in the sun….I wouldn’t suggest skipping this very important step as you’ll definitely regret it post-sun hours and possibly years later….

I can’t tell you how many times, I’d forget to apply sunscreen on my lips and ears! All, I can say is OUCH.

Why are mineral sunscreens better for you? (and the planet)

Natural minerals have beneficial properties that protect and preserve your skin. Using mineral based sunscreens physically block and reflect UV light (because the cream sits on top of your skin) and they start working the moment you apply them.

Titanium acts like your own yoga warrior, as a shield without absorbing into your skin, nor bloodstream. Zinc rocks the house in terms of healing properties with my favorite arsenal as it provides anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties giving you overall protection, especially for sensitive skin types. Mineral sunscreens are less likely to irritate the skin, they are also reef safe (no negative impact on marine ecology when you are swimming; Hawaii has currently band all chemical sunscreens); and mineral sunscreens have a longer shelf life.

Why chemical sunscreens (by big brands) are not safe for you and the planet?

Many common sunscreens are chemical based, which absorb UV light, a chemical reaction releases UV light as heat, then release them into your skin, then into your bloodstream to be effective. These harmful chemicals can be detected in breast milk and blood up to five days after application! You need to wait about 20 minutes for chemical sunscreens work. These toxic chemicals can actually trigger skin reactions, increase hyper-pigmentation, promote skin cancer growth and create free radicals damage in your body. Chemical laden sunscreens alter your hormone levels by disrupting the endocrine system, in addition to accelerating the pace of your delicate skin to age faster. Remember, your skin to the most outer layer of your body (your home) to protect your inner layer (bones, connective tissue, muscles, organs etc). If that outer layer is abused, how could it possibly support and protect you?

You can check your brand here, EWG even has a smart phone app!

To receive both UVA/UVA protection, the mineral sunscreen must say ‘broad spectrum’ or mention Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.

It's important to know, that not all sunscreens protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. When your skin turns pink or red aka SUNBURN, those are UVB rays are getting into your skin. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, which cause wrinkles, aging and in some cases cause cancer. So look for both UVB and UVA in your sun care. Think double warrior protection!

Benefits of Natural Sunscreens

-Contain the valuable minerals of Titanium and Zinc, these minerals act as a barrier blocking UVA & UVB rays.

{Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun rays, which then neutralize once in your skin}

-Reapplying natural sunscreen is not needed {as much*} since the protection sits on top of your skin rather than being absorbed. *you might need to reapply if you’re family is building sandcastles, the coarse texture of the sand could affect your initial application.

{Chemical sunscreens often need to be reapplied because the ingredients in them becomes dormant}

-Are much less irritating because natural sunscreens contain less allergenic ingredients (yes, people are allergic to natural ingredients/food, ie: peanuts, shellfish).

{Toxic ingredients in chemical sunscreens tend to irritate your skin....and more}

-Nourish and soothe your skin, while at the same time protecting it from the sun!

{Chemical sunscreens are prone to clogging the pores of your skin, causing acne}

About sun screen sprays:

-usually not good for the environment

-turns your skin into a white coat

-titanium dioxide* can be toxic if inhaled

*Nanoparticle or micronized titanium dioxide can penetrate cell walls which can cause DNA damage after exposure to sunlight. Fine or coarse particles of titanium dioxide are safer than nanoparticles. As they are effective with deflecting and absorbing UV light.

Seasons, especially summer bring together fun activities, friends and family gathering with much time spent outdoors in the sun. Be conscious and mindful of taking care of your skin (and your families) so that everyone can enjoy all the wonderful moments together. This is how you take yoga off your mat and into your life!
